Description

@samajammin asked for contributions to a new documentation page on formal verification for smart contracts, so I put together a high-level introduction on the topic. The guide explains what formal verification means, how it works, and tools developers can use to conduct formal verification for Ethereum smart contracts.

Source code for Ethereum smart contracts is usually [written in high-level programming languages](/developers/docs/smart-contracts/languages/), such as Solidity, Vyper, or Yul. The source code defines the business logic, which determines how users can interact with the contract and how the contract should behave in response to certain inputs.

Specifications are properties or used to

This sentence doesn't make sense to me. Should it be "Specifications are properties used to", or something else?

@emmanuel-awosika haven't been able to review this in detail yet but at first glance it looks like a great start! I'll share this around with some folks to get some eyes & input on it. Thanks again!

FYI I just pushed a couple commits to rename the file (index.md in a directory is our typical pattern) & added the page to the docs navigation.

Create open/active Ethereum research page

Description

Basic scaffolding for a new "get involved" page to highlight active areas of Ethereum research:

https://ethereumorgwebsitedev01-openresearch.gtsb.io/en/community/get-involved/open-research/

TODOs

  • Create basic structure
  • Talk to researchers - what are the open questions? What are topics & resources?
  • Decide how topics should be categorized - what's the hierarchy?
  • Decide final URI (e.g. should it just be /research/ vs. /community/get-involved/open-research/?)
  • Create draft
  • Circle w/ researchers for feedback

Related Issue

None, surfaced from IRL conversation at Devconnect. Basic use case here is there's many academics looking for open areas of research, e.g. for students looking for areas to dig into / write their thesis on. There's currently no great resource to find these active areas of research, so we'd like to create a page that aggregates these topics & links out to resources/publications where they can learn more. The hope is the research community can help add to this & maintain it over time.

[Running nodes](/developers/docs/nodes-and-clients/run-a-node/) on modest hardware is fundamental to keeping Ethereum decentralized. Therefore, active research into minimizing the hardware requirements to run nodes is an important area of research.

General (opinionated) note on links - feel free to just link directly in the content using relevant anchor text. No need to say "our xyz page", people know that a link takes them to a new page. We keep a consistent formatting so all internal looks have one style, while all external links have an arrow (↗) afterwards to signify it takes them to a different site.

Create open/active Ethereum research page

Description

Basic scaffolding for a new "get involved" page to highlight active areas of Ethereum research:

https://ethereumorgwebsitedev01-openresearch.gtsb.io/en/community/get-involved/open-research/

TODOs

  • Create basic structure
  • Talk to researchers - what are the open questions? What are topics & resources?
  • Decide how topics should be categorized - what's the hierarchy?
  • Create draft
  • Circle w/ researchers for feedback

Related Issue

None, surfaced from IRL conversation at Devconnect. Basic use case here is there's many academics looking for open areas of research, e.g. for students looking for areas to dig into / write their thesis on. There's currently no great resource to find these active areas of research, so we'd like to create a page that aggregates these topics & links out to resources/publications where they can learn more. The hope is the research community can help add to this & maintain it over time.
